I'm 27. I've been in a relationship with my boyfriend for almost four years.
Until a few months ago, I was sure about two things: that I loved him, and that I was straight.
Now I'm not sure about either.
I moved to another city for work last year and started sharing an apartment with another woman. She's 26. At first, we were just roommates—the usual conversations about rent, food, office problems, and whose turn it was to clean the kitchen.
Then she slowly became the person I spoke to about everything.
She knew when I had fought with my boyfriend before I even told her. She remembered things I mentioned once and forgot myself. Some nights, we'd sit on the balcony talking until 2 or 3 in the morning.
Nothing about it felt wrong.
Until it did.
One night, after a terrible argument with my boyfriend, I came home crying. She sat beside me without asking questions and held my hand.
It should have felt like comfort.
Instead, my heart started racing.
And that scared me.
After that night, I became aware of everything—the way she smiled at me, how close we'd sit while watching something, how much I looked forward to coming home when I knew she was there.
Then a few weeks ago, something changed between us.
We were talking late at night when she suddenly asked me:
“Have you ever liked a girl?”
I laughed and immediately said no.
She didn't laugh.
She just looked at me and said:
“Are you sure?”
I couldn't answer.
Nothing happened that night.
But since then, it feels like something has already happened in my head.
My boyfriend calls and tells me he misses me.
I say I miss him too.
And I do.
But then I put the phone down and find myself wondering whether my roommate is awake.
Part of me keeps saying this is just emotional closeness.
Another part of me knows I don't think about my other friends this way.
And the part I'm most afraid to admit is this:
If she kissed me, I'm not sure I would stop her.
Now I'm stuck between guilt and curiosity.
Am I emotionally cheating on someone I've loved for four years?
Am I discovering something about my sexuality that I've ignored my whole life?
Or am I simply confusing closeness with attraction because my relationship is struggling?
I don't want to destroy my relationship just to “find out.”
But I also don't want to spend the rest of my life wondering whether I ignored a part of myself because I was afraid of what it meant.
Yesterday, my roommate told me she wants to talk to me tonight.
I think I already know what she's going to say.
The problem is—
I still don't know what I want my answer to be.
What would you do?
Stay loyal and create distance?
End the relationship before exploring these feelings?
Or admit the truth and figure out what these feelings actually mean?
